teamLab

So there are a number of teamLab locations these days, both in Tokyo and then also in Osaka and most recently Kyoto. In general, I think these places are great and you should go to them all! But I will break down a bit based on the three we have been to.

teamLab Planets

This one is already mentioned in the Odaiba page. So I will just duplicate that here.

I did really like this. We had one notable disaster, where a 3 year old wanted to swim (she can't) in water a perfect depth for drowning in (around knee high on an adult) in a dark room. Aside from that, it's a yes yes yes. If you are sans children, it's an easy yes!

The only annoying bit here is the number of people who decide it is best used as their personal photo studio. Seriously, everyone is trying to get the perfect shot and it is so offputting and annoying! Just enjoy the place without the wank.

teamLab Borderless

This was the first one they made. When we first went in 2019 it was new, and in a temporary location. It subsequently closed but then got a permanent home!

They describe themselves as:

"a world of artworks without boundaries, a museum without a map created by art collective teamLab. Artworks move out of rooms, relate to other works, influence each other, and at times intermingle, without boundaries. Through this group of works, one continuous world without boundaries is created."

Essentially, think of it as light art. There are different mediums on which you can "paint" with light, and each renders a different effect. Some parts are interactive, all parts are beautiful. The first time we saw this it was in a temporary exhibit in a different building. I don't think I've been as impressed since that first visit, but that's probably just because of the known quanitity it is.

Definitely worth visiting! Between this and Planets...I would probably go for this, but do both if you have the time.

teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka

This one is outdoors, which is unique amongst the teamLab locations. While we did enjoy this one, it wasn't as immersive as the others, perhaps because it is fighting with the size of the outdoors, it's hard to fill that and keep you contained within the experience.
